Hi, Sophie! Could you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

“I’m from The Netherlands and I am 25 years old. I came to Jakarta in October 2016 for the final part of my Bachelor study for an internship. After I had successfully completed my internship and graduated, I decided to stay in Indonesia. Throughout my stay, my love for fashion has only increased. During the week, I work for a health start-up called YOUVIT and in the weekends I focus on my blog. Every Saturday and Sunday I block a couple of hours in my agenda to work on my platform. I love to sit in Caribou with my laptop, opposite Festival Walk. It’s quiet and a good place to focus. In the afternoon, my close friends Nina, Nadya and Chrysti will join me to catch-up, we made it our fixed spot. We catch-up and they help me with the preparations of the upcoming fashion show. They are my biggest support system, for which I am really thankfull!"

Can you tell us about your blog, your passion towards fashion, and what inspired you to start it?

"In the last couple of years, I developed my own sense of style. I was shopping in stores like Zara and Mango and instinctly knew what would fit me and what wouldn’t. Along the way, I found out that my taste gravitated more towards fashion items from of the 70’s and 80’s. Together with an inner thrive to share and inspire other people, I started Chic 24/7 where I share historical fashion trends to millenial women.

I try to make my posts on Instagram informative and educative. I want to provide my followers with an in-depth historical understanding of certain items that I like to wear or a specific design that I made. For example: How to wear a 80’s jumpsuit in the 21st century? Providing high quality content and high quality photos is very important to me."

Beberapa tahun terakhir, aku mulai "nemu" sense of style-ku. Misalnya, how to wear a 80’s jumpsuit in the 21st century? Plus, bikin konten dengan kualitas tinggi disertai foto berkualitas tinggi juga sangat penting buat aku.

What is your biggest challenge about fashion blogging?

"Starting a personal blog sounds like something that you would do on a lazy afternoon. But in reality, it’s far from that. I have to treat it like my own business. I have to always ask myself: How do I differentiate myself from others? How do I position myself? How do I create high valuable and interesting content? How can I, at the end, attract more followers? How can I make profit out of this? After how many months/years am I able to do this?
Another challenge is to find the right people to work with, like photographers and graphic designers. As I am quite picky and specific in what I want, I would definitely consider this as a challenge, especially since I don’t have a lot of budget from which to pay them."

Memulai sebuah blog pribadi sih kedengerannya gampang, ya?

What do you love the most, and dislike the most about blogging?

"I share my style to inspire people. Especially on Instagram I try to share unique content with my readers through a different angle of the photo or unique text. It’s great when people react and share the photo. But at the end, I just feel this inner thrive and I do this because I want to. The power comes from myself. Furthermore, I enjoy sharing my opinions regarding style and I love when people come to me for style advice. Chic 24/7 reflects who I am as a person.
What I don’t really like about blogging is that there is always a certain pressure to develop and post new pictures or to create new content."

How would you describe your personal style? Is there any difference between your current style here living in Jakarta compared to when you were in The Netherlands?

"My style hasn’t changed much since I moved from The Netherlands to Jakarta. I used to wear bright colors as well back in Europe. I would say that my style is a bit French. I always try to be classy and feminine. Chic 24/7 stands for a couple of values that I reflect in my style; easy to wear in daily life, curvy and of course, chic."

Menurutku, my style is a bit French.

Who was your first style icon?

"I don’t necessarily have a style icon or follow trends."

What are the essential fashion items you can’t live without?

"My hats, my black platform, my sunglasses, and my favorite lipstick - one of them is NYX SLMC in Stockholm."

Do you have any fashion rules when putting an outfit together?

Don’t match bright colours together, like don’t combine an orange top with a red skirt.

When you can’t think of anything to wear, what’s your go-to outfit?

Jumpsuit! 100 percent.

Where is your favorite place to shop in Jakarta?

"Grand Indonesia! I love to shop in stores like ZARA, Stradivarius, H&M, Forever21, and Marks and Spencer.
A fashion tip: Before you buy something, make sure it’s a big YES. When I see an item, I know right away if it’s a yes or a no. I only buy things that I extremly like. I’d rather have a couple of items that looks amazing compared to a closet full of things I never wear. For me it’s not about the quantity, but more about the quality. I’m super selective."

GI! Aku suka belanja di toko-toko seperti ZARA, Stradivarius, H&M, Forever 21, dan Marks&Spencer. Fashion tips dari aku: Sebelum kamu bei sesuatu, pastikan kalau kamu suka banget sama barang itu. Kalau aku melihat suatu barang, aku langsung tau kalau it's a yes or a no. Aku cuma mau beli barang yang aku suka banget.

How do you see fashion trends in Indonesia? Is there any significant difference than what is in Netherland?

"Very much! In Jakarta, I would describe the style from the girls as very feminine. Even if girls are just going to the mall, or having a small talk at coffee shop, they all dress up. That is very fascinating for me. And it is really different than what I’m used to in the Netherlands."

Banget!

So, we heard you are organizing a fashion show next week. Can you tell us a bit about it?

"Yes! This saturday (May 20th) I am organizing a mini trunk show to show 10 items that I designed myself to my close friends. It will be an intimate show for around 30 people and afterwards we will enjoy a 2 course dinner. The collection is classy and bright. It represents women who embrace their curvy bodies with a positive and happy mind."

Ya!

Where do you find inspirations for your designs?

First, I shop for inspirations on Pinterest. I have several mood boards where I select photos and recreate it with my own style. Secondly, I find my inspirations in the nature. Last week I went to Bandung and I loved it. I saw beautiful nature and especially one leaf that sticks in my mind. It inspires me to make a new item that I will call: “ Hommage to Indonesia”.

What are 3 fashion items that you believe a millenial woman must have? And could you tell us 3 fashion items that you will never wear?

"I will suggest a good pair of classy black leather flat shoes, a jumpsuit, and a pair of classic heels. About the heels; the simpler, the better.
Fashion items that I will never wear is a shirt with text on it, because it is just too sporty for me. Another fashion item I’d never wear in my daily life is a baseball cap, the type that people wear when they are watching a Yankees game. And the last thing I would never wear are UGG boots."

What the best advice you have ever received in your life?

"I have this particular book I read, which was a true eye-opener for me. It called “A Guide To The Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy” written by William Braxton Irvine. It taught me about Stoicism, a cure for anger, anxiety, grief, fear, and various other negative emotions that plague humans and prevent them from experiencing a joyful experience. It is my life guide. Furthermore, my brother, is a big source of inspiration for me."

Aku punya sebuah buku yang aku pernah baca, dan benar-benar membuka mata aku sepenuhnya. Bukunya berjudul A Guide To The Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy, yang ditulis sama William Braxton Irvine.

Last but not least, what is the best advice you could give anyone wanting to start a career in anything?

"Share your thoughts, share your ideas with people who are smarter than you are. Share it, preferably, with older people or anyone who has more experience than you. They know how things work. And the other advice is, share your (business) idea with friends and family. You will receive very valuable and honest feedback from them!"
